At heart, we consider how we can best meet the psychological and physical needs of domestic equines, with reference to understanding these needs as they apply to all mammals; to equines; and to the individual. 

Environmental mismatch – living in an environment your species did not evolve to cope with – is a huge challenge for domestic equines and their caregivers, so we pursue a deeper understanding of assessing and improving their complete environment.

Interactions with humans is another area of great interest. At both a species-wide and individual level, what are reasonable expectations physically and mentally of domestic equines? How do we form healthy relationships with them?

For the individual equine whose behaviour is causing concern, our Registered Equine Psychology Specialists use Trans-species Systemic Formulation® to ensure a broad analysis of both their physical and mental well-being, addressing trauma and stress-related issues for the individual situation. We focus on changing the world around the horse, and their experience of it, rather than focussing on behaviour modification.

This deeper understanding of course benefits the humans involved, not just the equines, leading to safer, healthier co-operation between species.

EBA members are passionate about disseminating what is known and actively exploring the profound effects of domestication in our attempts to enhance equine well-being and horse-human relationships.

To achieve this we strongly believe in establishing a community that offers education and accreditation, mentoring and CPD.

By offering tailored education and accreditation to all levels, we hope to spread awareness of equine psychological needs and how to manage and interact with them ethically across a broad range of equine professions.
